Like many first graders on their first day of school,
초등학교 1학년 첫날처럼
 Hwang Wol-geum cried.
황월금 씨는 울었지만
But these were tears of joy —
이건 기쁨의 눈물이었는데
 and Wol-geum is 70 years old.
월금 씨는 지금 70세다.
 As the birthrate in South Korea plummets,
대한민국의 출산율 저하로
rural schools are emptying.
지방학교들이 텅텅 비고 있다.
 To save itself from closing,

 has enrolled older villagers and grandmothers like Wol-geum
월금씨처럼 나이있는 마을주민들과 할머니들을 입학시켜왔는데
 who have dreamed of learning to read.
그들은 글자읽는 법을 배우길 꿈꿔왔다고.
 Decades ago,
수십년전
 Korean families often focused on educating their sons
한국가정에선 아들교육에만 집중해왔고
 and many girls were expected to stay home and look after siblings while their parents worked.
딸들은 대부분 부모들이 일하는 동안 집에서 다른 형제자매들 돌보게 했었다.
“I couldn’t believe this was actually happening to me,”
"이런 일이 정말 나에게 일어나다니 믿기지않아요." 라고
 Wol-geum said about going to school.
월금씨가 학교다니는 것에 대해 말했다
 “Carrying a school bag has always been my dream.”
"학교가방 매는 게 늘 꿈이었요."라고도.
