Herders in Lapland are struggling to locate thousands of reindeer that have run away, after warm weather left the food they graze on covered by a layer of ice.

What's in a name? Well, for Ji-Young, the newest muppet resident of "Sesame Street," her name is a sign she was meant to live there.

"So, in Korean traditionally the two syllables they each mean something different and Ji means, like, smart or wise. And Young means, like, brave or courageous and strong," Ji-Young explained during a recent interview. "But we were looking it up and guess what? Ji also means sesame."

Scientists may have detected signs of a planet transiting a star outside of the Milky Way, in what could be the first planet ever to be discovered outside our galaxy.⁠

The best olive oil in the world? This village thinks so.

Rameh, a Palestinian town surrounded by olive groves, has long had a reputation for producing especially good oil. Fresh out of the press, it is bright liquid gold, its aroma reminiscent of the wild grasses and dandelion leaves that grow around the olive trees. People describe it as ripe and smooth, almost like samneh (ghee, or clarified butter).

Could this be the significant step in the long quest to one day use animal organs for life-saving transplants?

In a major scientific advance, surgeons at a New York hospital have attached a pig’s kidney to a human and watched it begin to work - it filtered waste and produced urine – and for the first time ever did not trigger a rejection.

US surgeons say they have successfully given a pig's kidney to a person in a transplant breakthrough they hope could ultimately solve donor organ shortages.

The recipient was brain-dead, meaning they were already on artificial life support with no prospect of recovering.

The scenery on the remote and windswept Scottish archipelago of St. Kilda is otherworldly.

Some 40 miles west of the chief islands of the Outer Hebrides, St. Kilda has a tantalizing history, writes @sahiltner for @nytimestravel. It is replete with a rich cultural heritage, fiercely independent people, distinctive architecture and haunting isolation — as well as disease, famine and exile. Recent archaeological research suggests that the main island, Hirta, which is around 2.5 square miles, was inhabited as far back as 2,000 years ago.

Its last full-time residents, 36 in total, were evacuated to the mainland on Aug. 29, 1930.

Berlin has had what is being called a 'watershed moment'.

Citizens gathered enough signatures to trigger a referendum on whether to take properties back from 'mega landlords' (those who own over 3000 properties in their city).

The referendum took place earlier this week and was backed with a majority in favour of putting around 11% of all apartments in Berlin back into state ownership.

This sets a major precedent for many other cities that now find themselves in a housing crisis.

At this renowned English garden, getting your hands dirty is the point. For decades, the six-acre Great Dixter House & Gardens in East Sussex has been celebrated as a fount of experimentation and creativity. Gardening enthusiasts have for years sought out this rural corner of southeast England to attend its weeklong horticulture class, which feels like getting a Ph.D. in gardening.
