Albert Camus meurt le 4 janvier 1960 ans dans un accident de voiture à l’âge de 47 ans. Caligula, Les Justes, Le mythe de Sisyphe, L’Etranger, La chute, Le premier homme. Ecrivain, philosophe, dramaturge, il fut aussi un journaliste engagé. Témoin de son temps, militant, refusant le compromis, il déclare lors de son discours de réception du prix Nobel de littérature le 10 décembre 1957 à Stockholm.
«Je ne puis vivre personnellement sans mon art. Mais je n’ai jamais placé cet art au-dessus de tout. S’il m’est nécessaire au contraire, c’est qu’il ne se sépare de personne et me permet de vivre, tel que je suis, au niveau de tous. L’art n’est pas à mes yeux une réjouissance solitaire. Il est un moyen d’émouvoir le plus grand nombre d’hommes en leur offrant une image privilégiée des souffrances et des joies communes. Il oblige donc l’artiste à ne pas s’isoler; il le soumet à la vérité la plus humble et la plus universelle.»

Les premiers pas de Marcel Proust, un des auteurs majeurs du XXe siècle. Neuf nouvelles inédites, initialement destinées à figurer dans "Les Plaisirs et les jours" (1896) sont publiées en ce début d'octobre.
Quelques années avant de devenir l'éminent collaborateur du Figaro, on y découvre un écrivain en herbe avec sa parfaite maîtrise de l'expression. Dans ces textes se trouvent en germe les thèmes et les obsessions de " À la Recherche du temps perdu".
