US officials around the world have been getting sick with something called Havana Syndrome. What causes it, and why, are still a mystery.

다른 미국의 공무자들처럼 그도 하바나 신드롬이라 불리는 증상을 보고했는데, 2016년 말경 하바나 쿠바에서 이 현상의 첫 사례가 보고되면서 그런 이름이 붙었다.

리포터 그렉 마이어가 그를 인터뷰했으니 들어보자.

"의사들을 전전하며 MRI, CT, 엑스레이 수없이 찍었죠.

결국 한 신경의가 후두신경통이란 진단을 내렸습니다."

일부 과학자들은 방사선 때문일지도 모른다지만 확실하지 않다.

한편 바이든 대통령은 이번달 초에 하바나 법을 통과시켰는데, 이런 경우 뇌손상을 겪는 연방공무원들이 경제적 지원을 받게 될 거다.

Could this be the significant step in the long quest to one day use animal organs for life-saving transplants?

In a major scientific advance, surgeons at a New York hospital have attached a pig’s kidney to a human and watched it begin to work - it filtered waste and produced urine – and for the first time ever did not trigger a rejection.

But for many people raising pigs to be organ donors feels morally wrong, though it may grow more acceptable if concerns about animal welfare can be addressed, says Karen Maschke, a research scholar at the Hastings Center. “The other issue is going to be: Should we be doing this just because we can?” Maschke said.

US surgeons say they have successfully given a pig's kidney to a person in a transplant breakthrough they hope could ultimately solve donor organ shortages.

The recipient was brain-dead, meaning they were already on artificial life support with no prospect of recovering.

Experts say it is the most advanced experiment in the field so far.
