Alpaca and llama therapy is one of the most popular alternative therapies available for the 152 people living in this care home in the German town of Rudolstadt.

The scenery on the remote and windswept Scottish archipelago of St. Kilda is otherworldly.

Some 40 miles west of the chief islands of the Outer Hebrides, St. Kilda has a tantalizing history, writes @sahiltner for @nytimestravel. It is replete with a rich cultural heritage, fiercely independent people, distinctive architecture and haunting isolation — as well as disease, famine and exile. Recent archaeological research suggests that the main island, Hirta, which is around 2.5 square miles, was inhabited as far back as 2,000 years ago.

With a population that peaked at around 180 in the late 17th century, St. Kilda has never made for a convenient home. Its inhabitants raised sheep and a few cattle and were often able to grow simple crops like barley and potatoes. But the mainstay of their diet came from seafowl: the birds’ eggs, along with the birds themselves, which were consumed both fresh and cured. Its last full-time residents, 36 in total, were evacuated to the mainland on Aug. 29, 1930.

Berlin has had what is being called a 'watershed moment'.

Citizens gathered enough signatures to trigger a referendum on whether to take properties back from 'mega landlords' (those who own over 3000 properties in their city).

=> 베를린 시민들이 투표에 부칠 수 있을 만큼 동의서명을 얻는 주제는, 초특급 부동산 부자들(시내에 3천 건 이상의 부동산을 소유한 사람들)에게서 자산을 되돌려받느냐마느냐!

The referendum took place earlier this week and was backed with a majority in favour of putting around 11% of all apartments in Berlin back into state ownership.

This sets a major precedent for many other cities that now find themselves in a housing crisis.

=> 이번주 초에 있었던 투표에서 대다수가 베를린 아파트의 11%를 국유화하는 것에 찬성. 이는 주택문제가 심각한 다른 지역에도 유의미한 전례.


참고로 원 게시물의 슬라이드 내용을 요약하자면, 베를린 시민 100만명 이상이 주택을 상품이 아닌 사회재로 취급하자는 취지의 사회운동을 벌이는 중. 캠페인의 의도는, 국가가 부동산부자들에게 주택을 수용(부동산소유주의 의지와 상관없이 국가가 공공목적으로 부동산을 국유화하는 것)해서 젠트리피케이션으로 인한 주택문제를 해결하라는 것. 수용하는 대가는 지불하되 현재 시세대로 줄 필요 없으며 수용된 부동산에서 나오는 월세를 이용하여 장기적으로 지불하면 된다는 게 이들의 주장. 그래도 집값이 적당한 편이었던 베를린도 지난10년간 젠트리피케이션(일대가 고급주택화 되면서 원래 살던 사람들이 비용감당을 못해 밖으로 밀려나는 현상)으로 인해 집값이 두 배 이상 상승한 상황. 베를린 시민의 80%가 세입자. 평균 월급의 65%를 월세로 지불하는 런던이나 평균 월세가 2천 파운드가 넘어가는 더블린 같은 다른 도시들처럼 주택문제가 심각. 이번 투표가 법적구속력은 없지만 과반수 이상이 찬성했다는 점에서 논의가 진전될 힘을 얻었다고. 반대자들은 위헌이라지만 독일헌법14조에 따르면 공공이익을 위한 수용은 가능. 베를린의 첫 여성시장도 처음엔 강하게 반대하다가 투표결과가 나오니까 존중의사표시.

At this renowned English garden, getting your hands dirty is the point. For decades, the six-acre Great Dixter House & Gardens in East Sussex has been celebrated as a fount of experimentation and creativity. Gardening enthusiasts have for years sought out this rural corner of southeast England to attend its weeklong horticulture class, which feels like getting a Ph.D. in gardening.

A sheep, a goat and three lambs escaped from their farm in Turkey and decided to visit the nearby town hall.🐐🐑
The incident in Nevsehir, central Turkey, was caught on CCTV and shows the animals exploring, and chasing after a few locals. After roaming around for a short while, they were reunited with their owner in the Gore district. It looks like all they want is just to be loved and patted. Yet it's also true that it might be puzzling and even threatening to confront them on the spot. Anyhow the animals seem to have a lot to appeal to the world, I suppose. Otherwise they are just a little overexcited on their first expedition by themselves. 😂 Whatever the cause might be, they've got my support. Way to go, cute animals! 🙌

It was so nice to see Korean food introduced by NPR but it's just one of the side dishes that Koreans eat with cooked rice on a daily basis, not on a special occasion. Say American families gather together to eat pickles only without pizza, how weird!
